The following day, I pitched my idea on how to take down the president to Amy.

She giddily agreed. “I know just what to do—A truth campaign. We can hack into some high-profile websites, like the CDC and the president’s website. Oooh, I can’t wait to hack his Twitter account!”

I laughed. President Lamp’s twitter feed was a source of daily annoyance, and it made me wonder how he could possibly get any work done with all the tweets he posted. I assumed it was some White House intern posting it, but they all had his trademark recklessness and superiority. If it was an intern or some other hired staff, he or she was damn good at impersonating the president.

I tested the mice, and all sixteen had contracted the DESVID virus. I documented all the different variables—size, sex, any blood abnormalities from the onset. Then I gave eight of the mice (group A) the first serum from the ten vials I stole that I hadn’t destroyed. I gave the other eight (group B) the new serum I gave my father. I also made sure the mice in group A were in separate cages this time.

I glanced at the clock and yawned. 9:00AM. Too late for my tired bones. I gave Amy a list of things to do, regarding setting up our new corporation. Then I curled up in my new super comfy bed in the master bedroom and passed out.

“Look at the bite marks,” Amy said. “How the skin was penetrated.”

I observed the photo. At first glance it was just a bloody mess, but I was able to zoom in on the neck of the victim. “Wait, this wasn’t done by a vampire.”

“Exactly.”

I awoke to the bizarre sound of “Queen of the Night” playing on my cell phone. It took me a few seconds to realize it was now somehow my ring tone. I made a mental note to yell at Amy later, as I clicked the little green phone button.

“Hello?” I hoped my voice wasn’t too groggy.

“Damn, did I wake you up?” Edgar sounded so apologetic. “I’m sorry.”

I glanced at the time—5PM. “No, it’s fine. What’s going on?”

“There was another victim last night.” His tone grew dark. “He was a hybrid.”

“Wait, the victim was a hybrid?” That didn’t make any sense. Wouldn’t a hybrid vampire be able to defend against a normal human?

Unless…the killer wasn’t a normal human.

“What was the cause of death?”

“To be determined,” he said. “And yes, there were bite marks.”

That left two possibilities. Another hybrid vampire, which seemed unlikely. After all, the two vampiric mice in the cage didn’t attack each other.

Or a full-on vampire like me. But why would a vampire hunt a hybrid?

“Liz, you still there?”

“Yeah, sorry. Was just thinking about the attack.”

“I’m wondering if it was someone from the coven.”

I should’ve known he would come to the same conclusion as I had.

“I don’t know where they are,” I said, though it’s not like I would have told him if I did. I knew just how dangerous James and the others were.
